Whisper Chain is the drawing-telephone format - draw a phrase, hand it on, someone writes what they think it shows, the next person draws that - dressed up as an office rumour mill. It starts with a prompt from a deck of corporate whispers, and by the end of the chain that prompt has usually become something nobody would recognise. The reveal is the whole point, and it is where the laughing happens.

It is built to run alongside a video call. The host puts the room on a shared screen, everybody else plays on their own device, and the game tells you whose turn it is so nobody has to referee. Turns are strictly one at a time, which sounds slow but keeps a group of eight watching the same thing instead of drifting off into eight private tabs.

How to play Whisper Chain

  1. One person creates a room and shares the generated link. Everyone else joins through it; the order people join in becomes the fixed turn order.
  2. The chain starts with a suggested rumour from the prompt deck. Player one draws it, freehand, in 45 seconds. They never see the prompt written down again and never type anything.
  3. Player two sees only that drawing - not the original rumour - and has 60 seconds to write what they think it is.
  4. Player three sees only player two's caption and gets 45 seconds to draw it. Play alternates drawing and captioning down the line.
  5. A timer that runs out advances the turn anyway, so a stuck player cannot stall the whole room.
  6. When the last player finishes, the complete chain - original rumour, every drawing, every caption, in order - is revealed on every screen at once. The reveal can be exported as a single PNG to post in a channel afterwards.

Strategy and tips

  • Draw nouns, not sentences. The next player has to name what they see, so one clear object beats an ambitious scene every time.
  • Resist writing words into your drawing. It defeats the game, and the 45 seconds are better spent making one shape legible.
  • When you are captioning, write exactly what you see rather than what you suspect the chain was about. Guessing at the original is how chains snap back and stop being funny.
  • Be specific in captions. "A man" gives the next artist nothing; "a man losing a fight with a printer" gives them something to draw badly.
  • Bigger groups are funnier but slower. Six to eight players is the sweet spot: long enough for real drift, short enough that nobody waits five minutes for a turn.

What makes Whisper Chain different

The prompt deck is written around work life - the meeting that should have been an email, the rumour about the reorg - rather than the random-noun decks most telephone games ship with. That gives a team something to recognise in the first drawing, which makes the drift away from it land harder.

It also runs strictly one player at a time. Games in this genre usually have everybody drawing simultaneously in parallel chains, which is faster but means nobody watches anybody else. Here there is one chain, one reveal, and a host view that a whole room can look at together.

And the reveal exports as an image. The thing people actually want after a round like this is something to paste into a channel, so the game makes that a button rather than an exercise in screenshotting.

Frequently asked questions

Is Whisper Chain like Gartic Phone?

The core loop is the same drawing-telephone idea. The differences are that Whisper Chain runs a single shared chain rather than parallel ones, uses an office-rumour prompt deck, and needs no account at all.

How many people do I need?

Two works, but the drift that makes the game funny needs a longer chain. Aim for at least four, and up to ten.

Can I use it on a phone?

Yes. Drawing with a finger is arguably an improvement, given the point of the game.
